Super relaxing week

It's been a very long time since I feel so liberating. With no responsibilities and no financial worries, it's like being a kid again. Well, even better than kids coz I get to do whatever I want whenever I want. Hehe. Early in the week, I went shopping. Oh the joy of shopping! I bought some tops, a skirt, and 2 dresses coz I couldn't decide which to pick. They were 50% off so I got two for the price of one. I bought a pair of sandals too. It feels so good to finally be able to wear skirts and sandals again. I wanna paint my nails too but I think I'll just go for a manicure and pedicure when I go back to KL. I've also managed to watch quite a few movies, both new and old. I find Leon (1994) an interesting movie. And Harold & Kumar go to White Castle is just hilarious (2004). Also watched tv series Everybody Loves Raymond and Joey. It's just a coincidence that I picked both with Italian background. Watching them again, I enjoyed it even more, knowing now how Italians are.

Well, I guess I'm pretty much all set for Istanbul and Greece for the next 10 days.

Hogwarts Sorting Hat Quiz

After seven long years, the story of Harry Potter has finally come to end. It has been a wonderful journey thus far and I'll be looking forward to the last two movies. I feel like reading all the books again but it'll take too much time. I'll probably just watch the movies again even though they aren't that great. Came across some sorting hat quizes and took them. As expected, I'm a Rawenclaw. Hehe.

Caldonazzo Lake

I didn't know that this lake is only less than an hour away by train. When we set out in the morning, the weather was cool and mostly cloudy. While my friends prayed for sunshine, I just hoped that it wouldn't rain. There were a few beaches along the lake and they were still quite empty. We picked a shady spot and laid our stuff down. Then we decided to take the paddle boat out to the lake. The weather turned partly cloudy with cool breeze. Wished I have a boat of my own so I can lie there as long as I want.

After we came back from paddling, I stayed in our spot to finish reading Train Man while the others went swimming. Even though it started to get crowded, I was surprised that it wasn't noisy. I get to enjoy my book with a beautiful view and pleasant weather. So glad it wasn't hot like it had been for the past week; over 40C!. As we were heading back to the train station, it started to drizzle. We realised we were late so we had to run to the station and were lucky enough to catch the train. After a couple of minutes, rain started to pour. Then I started hoping that the rain would stop when we get off and it did!

Exams are over!

The exam period sure felt like a very long time even though I took a one week break to go on vacation. The last exam turned out better than I expected. I did quite badly in explaining the algorithm of my applications. I was just spilling out formulas which I memorised the day before. He was expecting some sort of presentation like a set of slides but we weren't aware of it. His assistant told him that she told us that we need not prepare slides. Well I managed to show him that my application works but I doubt he understood how I made it work. He asked to explain the code and I started taking a long route instead of showing him directly the important parts. After a couple of minutes, he suddenly just asked for my exam book. When I passed it to him, he said he'll give me the marks after they look at the other student's application. He somehow made me feel that I'm wasting his time.

I was very nervous during the wait and tried to distact myself from listening to the other student's exam. They seemed to have a better strategy with him and he was using the blackboard to explain stuff. Each of us have different projects so I can't tell whether the explaination is good or not. After the student finished, I thought they would need some time to discuss our marks. A minute later, he told us that they propose the high score. I thought it didn't apply to me until he asked me if I'm ok with the score. I said yes. Then he continued to propose that he would give us the highest possible score if we do some documentation. The other student agreed and so I followed suit. He asked if we could trust us and give us the score now and expect to get the documentation later. He then wrote the scores in our exam books. After they left, we started working on the documentation and finished it a few hours later. This morning I got replies from them that they liked my slides. Phew!

Good times in Aachen

ich habe meine Deutsch Prüfung bestanden! :D

When I arrived at the train station, I was only expecting Laurent and was suprised the gang of friends were also there to meet me. We went for dinner at a nearby little asian shop. The food portion is huge, probably similar in size to the portion in Chicago chinatown. The next day, we met up with Jose and had dinner in front of the Rathaus. We chose the restaurant next to Starbucks so that we could go there for coffee after dinner. I found out that both of them loved the huge comfy chairs there as well. Hehe. Unfortunately, Starbucks was closed after we finished dinner. I think it closed at 8pm. So decided to go to one of the ice cafes for ice cream. They sell very fancy ice cream combinations just like here in Italy but only for 2/3 of the price. We looked at the menu and chose the smallest type and it still turned out to be big. Bigger than the picture really.

After my German exam on Friday, I walked around town and did some shopping. Then, I went to the bookstore to get some books to read during the vacation. There are so many nice books and it was difficult to decide what to buy. I picked a few books and went to the seating area and started to read the first few pages to see how I like them. I was reading Mitch Albom's latest, For One More Day, and when I stopped and looked up I saw that I've already read 50 pages. That's about a third of the book. Since I have time I decided to finish the book. I skipped a couple of sub stories but in the end I know whether it's a ghost story or not.

We went to Cologne on Saturday. Our itinerary include KFC for lunch, shopping for backpack, shoes and sleeping bag, and watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. They weren't many people watching it and there's no commercial. I think the cinema in KL would still be very crowded.
On Sunday, we had a bbq session at the park and were worried that it might rain. The weather was cool and the sky was mostly cloudy. It drizzled lightly for a few minutes while we were grilling the meat. Then the clouds moved away. The weather was just perfect. Cool with the sun mostly covered by clouds. The breeze is a bit chilly though. When I got back to Italy, I'm dreading the hot hot sun again. Going to be staying home as much as I could.

If I really tried, I think I might be able to write this post in German.

Munich: Meat and beer aplenty!

We ordered a pot (2 portions) of typical Bavarian dishes. It consists of sausages, sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, knodel dumplings, schweinshaxe (pork meat), and deep fried super crispy something which we think is pork skin; all in rahm sauce. Although I'm not a fan of pork, the food is tasty. However, towards the end of the meal, it starts to taste saltier. I guess that's where the huge mug of beer comes along.

Trip to the Dolomites

Located to the south of the main chain of the Alps, the Dolomites are notable for their composition of pale colored dolomite-- a limestone like rock formed beneath deep, ancient seas-- atop darker volcanic bedding. These fabulous vertical reefs glow in the changing light and present a startling and dramatic contrast to the pastoral beauty beneath. It took about 2 hours by bus from Trento to Passo Pordoi and then cable car up to Sass Pordoi at 2950m. The entire experience has just been breathtaking. I've posted some photos in my Flickr set and they did no justice to its beauty.

After a week of eating lots of meat, fried stuff, and desserts, I decided to have some lighter asian style food with light broth.

Spent so much!

Ohh... I've spent so much money in the past month. I knew I bought various stuff but the total amount only hit me when I checked my statement. Bits here and there really adds up. And it's not so noticable when the transaction is non cash. I've bought quite a few flight and train tickets. These add up to a significant amount but at least I earn miles with my flights. Also bought some books from Amazon. And there are still more books that I wanna get. The one week vacation had cost on average 100€ a day with 40% on transportation, 25% on accomodation and the rest mostly on food, some admission fees and etc. I'm not sure if it's expensive but it does make it an enjoyable vacation :D

Worst train ride

The night train from Vienna to Verona was the most uncomfortable of all train rides I ever had. Even worse is that we had to be on it for about 12 hours! It was so different from the German night train that I took last time. If I knew it was an Italien operated train, I would not have booked the train. We should've just taken a flight. When we board the train at about 19:30, it was extremely hot and stuffy. There was no AC. We complained it was too hot and the conductor just rolled down the windows for us and said it'll be cooler later when the train starts moving. We went to check on the other cars and they were nice and cool. We wanted to move to the other car but the conductor said we're not allowed to do so. We can only stay in the compartment that we have booked. Sigh! I guess we're really unlucky to have been assigned to this lousy car. It got a bit cooler (from the wind) when the train starts moving. Then the conductor came and asked us to shut the window and said that the AC is now functioning. Well, after we shut the window, the AC was still not cool. Anyway, we got to enjoy the amazing mountain view only for a while as it started to rain and the sun was already setting. Then, we went to bed early but couldn't get much sleep.

Tired & Lazy

Back from a week long vacation in Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Budapest. Been very lazy at home since. It's so comfy and cool; don't feel like doing anything at all. But then, I still have 2 more exams next week so have been reminding myself to study. I'll post the travel stories later. Nevertheless, some of the photos have been uploaded to Flickr.

Cooking Spaghetti Bolognese

Eventhough this is one of the simplest pasta to cook, I haven't been making it. Maybe because it's meaty. Today I decided to give it a try and made a green salad on the side to go with it. Now I remember how tasty it can be; juicy bits of meat on hot pasta. At first I planned to cook the sauce for 90 minutes like the recipe Christine posted on her blog. As time passed, the smell of it made me more hungry so I only managed to cook the sauce for about 45 minutes and it's already tasty.

Travel Guide

Schmap Guides is an interactive travel guide where map and guide content are dynamically connected. It gives a nice virtual tour of a place as you go along the streets on the map and see slideshow of photos. It's quite a handy tool for planning trips. Anyway, one of my London New Year's Parade photo was selected to be included in the Schmap London Third Edition guide. They've made "schmapplets" of some sections of the London Guide and I thought I'd post one of them here.

Troubled Heart

Feste Vigiliane

The Feste Vigiliane revive the historical celebrations held in honour of Saint Vigilio, the Patron Saint of Trento. For one week, the streets of the city centre are transformed into an ancient village where you can see trades and crafts of bygone times and enjoy traditional Trentino food. There are also musical events like jazz concert, opera, rock concert and dance exhibition.

Cooking tomyum risotto

I had a bit of aborio rice left and didn't feel like making plain white rice coz it's doesnt taste nice. Was thinking what I could make from the tomyum paste besides fried rice, pasta and soup. So I thought I'll just try a plain risotto by replacing chicken stock with tomyum soup. And boy it turned out to be delicous! All the soup absorbed into the creamy rice making it very flavorful. Next time, I can add shrimp and stuff to it. Hehe. This would make a very nice warm meal for the cold winter days.

Cooking green curry chicken

Everytime I cook rice, there would at least be an extra portion and it'll go to the fridge. Since I don't have the equipment to reheat anything easily, I'll end up making fried rice or rice stew with it. Then I struck me today that I can make curry. First cook the curry then pour the rice over the hot curry and you get one hot satisfying meal. Hehe. Oh, it goes well with bits of corn and carrots too. Was kinda lazy to separate them out from the opened pack of mix veg.

Eating Döner kebab

Besides pizza, kebab is the other fast food available here. It has shredded meat combined with your choice of vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc and 3 different sauces. I usually take everything except the onions. Although kebab is the more expensive one here, I find it tastier and more filling compared to pizza. And definately a lot more meat too. As we were walking to the kebab store, I suddenly thought of hamburger. Haven't have a burger for a long time. Maybe it's just been 2 months but it does feels like a long time for someone who used to eat McD/BK once a week on average. There isn't any of these fast food restaurants here. Well, we know there is a McD coz we've seen signboards but we aren't sure where exactly it is. I have a rough idea but haven't had the time to actually be looking for it. Maybe I'll go look for it when I get bored from all the studying for the finals.

Classes are over

I survived the 8:30am classes! Towards the end of the semester, it was starting to get difficult to get up at 7am every day. And I did ended up late for class a couple of times. Now that classes are over, I can go back to my normal sleeping hours. Hehe. Still have some projects to complete and also to study for the final exams. After that, it's holiday! :D

Summer movies

I'm missing out on all the big summer movies! Spiderman 3, Shrek the 3rd, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, and all the ones coming up in June and July. :( I miss watching movies at the cinema. The experience is just not the same at home. It's a lot worse when I've only got my small laptop and puny speakers. Sigh! It usually takes some time for the movies to come out in the cinema here coz they need to dub them first. Chances of finding a cinema here that shows movies in original language is zero. Doubt that Verona (30 minutes by train) has any either. Well thanks to the internet, low quality version is usually available within a week. Either watch that or wait. No other choice, just have to live with it. So far, I've managed to watched a decent quality Spiderman 3 and a not too bad quality (cannot watch in full screen) of Shrek the 3rd. A friend has just downloaded Pirates and hopefully I'll get to watch it this weekend.

Trip to Val di Non

Went for day trip to the San Romedio Sanctuary and Canyon Rio Sass last weekend. Both places are within 90 minutes from Trento. The San Romedio Sanctuary housed one of the most important church in the Trentino region. It also has very interesting history and legends. The main church is very very old and very beautiful. Not grand beautiful like those famous churches but antique and serene beautiful. No pictures were allowed so I can only keep it in memory. We stopped for lunch at tranquil Lake Smeraldo and then walked towards the canyon. The entrance fee is 6€ and you get to wear a raincoat and a hard hat. The raincoat was not really necessary as there's not much water. Some parts of the canyon is quite narrow that I can barely walk straight through without turning to the side. What's amazing is the engineering of the suspended metal "floor" we get to walk on. Well, the rocks are great too but I can't really tell what's the difference. Hehe.

Cooking pasta

Fusilli con pancetta, i pomodori e i piselli
(Spiral pasta with bacon, tomatoes and peas)

I didn't know before that the various shapes and sizes of pasta is used for different style of cooking. And there are tons of different shapes and sizes. For long thin strands, spaghetti is No. 5. The number starts from 1 which is the thinnest and goes up to maybe 10 or more. As for the sauce, there isn't much variety here. The pasta sauce section in the grocery store is mostly filled with just tomato paste or tomato puree. I guess the people here just buy the base sauce and add whatever they want inside later. I don't find sauce like those Prego makes. For wet sauce, tubular pasta like penne is more suitable to hold the sauce. Well, I had to use fusilli since I ran out of penne and as a result, there's more sauce left over on the plate. Didn't have bread to clean it either.

Buon Appetito!

Europe Vs. Italy

It's very true! Even the Italians agree. Hehe.

Largo di Garda

Took a break from working on projects during the long weekend and went for a day trip to Lake Garda. It's one of the largest lake in Italy and the Trentino side of the lake is surrounded by mountains. It's just beautiful. The weather was nice albeit too windy sometimes. I guess the wind is good for activities like sailing and wind surfing. We went paddling in the lake for an hour, had lunch, and just walked along the lake to the next town. Such a relaxing day! It's nice that it's only 90 minutes away by bus and it's free when you have the yearly transportation pass. It's probably the best 'freebie' we get here. Hehe.

Riva del Garda

Main beach in Torbole
The night train from Bonn to Milan was quite a nice experience. They even served breakfast! Arrived in Milan central station at almost 8am and headed to the tickets counter to buy a ticket to Trento. I was told that there would be a strike that day and trains would not be runnning. Even if I leave with the next train, I might still be stuck in Verona. The girl at the counter asked me to return later in the afternoon to get the latest update. So I decided to walk around the city and checked my luggages into the luggage deposit. Bought a day transport ticket for 3€ and went around the city. It's such a shopping heaven! Anyway, I went back to the train station at 2pm and was told that the next train leaving for Verona would be at 4:30pm. I insisted to buy the ticket anyway coz I didn't want to queue when the train starts to run again as it would be a very very long queue. Plus I know tickets for regional trains are valid for about a month so even if I ended up staying over in Milan, I could still use it the next day.

I went back to the city to continue sightseeing, mostly window shopping as no luggage space and returned to the train staton at 4pm. I checked my luggages out and found a spot to sit and stare at the information board. The board finally updated the platform number for my train and I quickly rushed to get my ticket validated and get on the train. There were already dozens of people on the train. I managed to get my luggages into the luggage compartment and an old gentleman was already sitting there. I stood next to my luggages and more and more people boarded the train. Since it was the first train out to Verona, the whole train was packed. We barely have space to stand and people were standing inside the toilet in the next compartment. When the train finally moved, everyone felt relief. After an hour, the train became less packed and after 2 hours, I finally got to sit but I started to worry that I might be on the wrong train since it shouldn't take so long to get to Verona. Another half an hour went by and I started to see familiar landscapes and I confirmed with a fellow passenger that we were finally in Verona. Got off the train to board the next train to Trento. This time the train was already there and there were plenty of seats. While waiting for the bus home in Trento, I met my friends who also got stuck in Milan. They reminded about strikes on Fridays. Oh, now I'll definately remember to keep that in mind. Well, I finally got home at around 10pm.
My flight from Paris was supposed to depart at 8:40am. There was a long line going through security and I was quite nervous that I might miss the plane. It was 8:45am after I cleared security but still the screen did not display the gate number for the flight yet. About 10 minutes later, there was an announcement in French and German calling passengers of my flight to a certain gate. Then another announcement was made and we were told that the flight was cancelled and we had the option to take the next flight to either Stuttgart or Düsseldorf. Not much information were given out and also lack of coordination between airline crew. When I asked when's the next available flight out to Cologne/Bonn, I was told 4:30pm. So they expect people to wait from 10:30am to 4:30pm in the airport! What if that flight is also not coming? I didn't want to take the chances and I knew there's a train leaving at noon so I went to train station in the next terminal to ask if there are still seats available. By the time I went back to retrieve my checked-in luggage and headed to the counter to purchase the ticket, the express counter was closed. I had to wait in line in the normal queue and I missed the noon train. Luckily, there's another train in an hour and I took that and finally got back to Bonn at about 5pm. The bank was still open and I managed to get my banking matters done. Headed back to my old dorm to my friend's room and started packing my stuff into the luggages. By the time I finished, it was time to leave for the train station again. I didn't have the time to do Asian grocery shopping as planned. Still, managed to grab nuggets from the McD nearby the train station for dinner. :)
The day started with taking the 9:34 am bus to the train station. We forgot to press the bell for the stop but luckily we could still make it on time to take the train from town at 11:05. It's a direct train to Venice. When we arrived in Venice at 14:30, we decided to have some lunch first before heading to the airport. We arrived at the check-in counter at 16:00 and we saw the board showed the expected time at 19:30. Our flight was supposed to depart at 18:10. At first my friend thought it's the time of arrival, which is correct. I was the first to check-in and I asked what the expected time means? The lady said that that's the time the flight is expected to depart. So I said "There is a delay then" and I got a typical Italian reply. "Maybe. We're not sure yet. Could still depart on time" Just great! So we had to hang around the airport instead of walking around Venice town. When it was close to 18:00, there was no call for boarding and no change on the board so we knew for sure the flight was delayed. We continued to wait and 19:30 passed and still no plane in sight. 5 minutes later, there was an announcement and the expected time on the board was updated to 20:30.

The expected time had been updated several times between 20:30 and 23:00 when they announced that the passengers could get refreshments from a cafe. Earlier we heard that the airport in Paris will be closed when we arrive so the flight crew may decide not to fly. Well, they started boarding at 23:30 and told us that the arrival airport will be changed to CDG (north) instead of Orly (south) and a shuttle bus will be provided to take us to Orly. With the airport and subway closed, we were concerned with how/what we are going to do. After all the passengers have boarded the plane, the captain made an announcement explaining the delay and the expected departure time will be 00:30 and arrival in Paris at 02:00. Since the airports are way outside of the city center and taxi fare will be very very expensive, we also asked the stewardess if the shuttle bus can make a stop in the city center. They told us that the company had chatered the bus to Orly only and we have to ask the bus driver ourselves. Sigh! Finally at 00:45, our flight took off.

We arrived in Paris past 2am and found out that there were two busses. One to Orly and one to the city center. We took the bus to the city center. There were night busses running and a couple of us took the bus to head to their hotel. The others didn't have anywhere to go since their hostel check-in was already closed. I only had subway directions to my hotel so I hung around with the rest walking along the almost empty Champs Elysees in the direction of the Eifel Tower. The tower is no longer lit but still barely visible. Past the tower, we decided to walk to the hostel but we kinda got lost with no proper map with us. It was nearly 5am so we decided to go to the nearest underground station. We spent some time in the station deciding what type of tickets to get which will be the cheapest. The guy at the counter was very helpful indeed. I finally got the hotel at 6am and the check-in counter was open and they speak English. :) Got to my room, showered, rest a bit then head out to explore Paris.

Lunch in Innsbruck

Austrian food is delicious! With Germany and Italy as neighbours, culinary influences from both countries are clearly evident. The food that we ordered have more resemblance to German food and luckily it doesn't taste like it. I think maybe they're cooked in the Italian way which makes it taste good.

Paris

Good sights, excellent food, nice people :D

Eating gelato

Gelato is just so irresistible! Almost everytime I go to town, I'd end up buying a cone with one big scoop. It costs between €1-2. The other day I found a Gelateria that sells 2 scoops for €1.50. Well it's not as good as the more expensive shops but you get 2 flavors! And I just realised this morning that I shouldn't be having ice cream when I have a cough :(

Cooking fried rice

After a month here, I've finally cooked something asian at home. Although there is no chinese grocery store here, there is a thai store which has similar stuff.

Squeaky Shoes

For the past month, my shoes have been making squeaking sounds whenever I walked on wet surfaces. At first, I just ignored it since it's seldom wet here. Then on one wet day, I was walking about 10ft behind a couple of guys and my shoes were squeaking so loudly that those guys turned around to see what's making the sound. I pretended I didn't hear anything and started walking much slower. I suspected it's caused by drying them in the dryer earlier. When I moved, I wanted the shoes to be cleaned before I put them into the luggage. So I washed them by hand and had difficulty drying them. At first, I put them on my window ledge but the wind was blowing so strongly that day that I was afraid they'll get blown away. I took them back in and put them on top of the heater. It didn't get any drier so I decided to put them into the dryer for about 25 minutes. It turned out still a bit damp and I left it on the heater overnight. I was quite relieved that they turned out ok. Well, when I checked just now, I found out that some parts of the sole are loose! I guess the some of the glu did have melted under the heat. This is most probably the cause of the squeaking sound. Now I need to find a glu for it and hopefully they sell it in the supermarket.

The Mountains

It snowed in the mountains yesterday

Living in Italy

I have classes starting at 8:30am every day and amazingly, I'm not struggling to get up eventhough I still go to bed around midnight. Wonder if I can keep it up for the rest of the semester. Hehe. The classes here are more technical and some of them involved programming. I have only started installing the necessary development tools and have yet to get my hands dirty. The projects are due in the end of the semester so there's time for me to learn Java and OpenGL again.

It's very inconvenient to do shopping here as the shops are closed in the middle of the day for lunch (usually 3 hours) and then closed for the day at 6pm or 7pm. In addition to being closed on Sundays, the shops are also closed either on a Monday mornings or Wednesday evenings. It's a great place to work! Also, there are no department stores here so it's quite difficult to figure out where to buy stuff and things here are more expensive than Germany.

Food here is nice. Even at the Mensa, you get a complete Italian meal with bread, pasta or riso, meat or fish, salad, fruits or dessert, and water or coffee. After taking lunch at Mensa, I'm still full in the evening so I usually just have bread or fruits for dinner. I haven't been cooking much either. So far, I've only been making pasta and frying up some fish fingers and chicken nuggets at home. I also found instant risotto packets with various flavors that cooks in 15 minutes. There's only one small pan and 2 big pots in the kitchen and it's difficult to cook the stuff that I wanna make with those. I also feel like I need to cook fast since my flatmate would want to cook next. Had a cooking session with a couple of friends for Friday's dinner. My contribution was abc soup and stir-fried veg. Hehe got others who can cook the meat.

Since I don't have internet at home, I think I would be more productive at working with school stuff. Sometimes I would bring my laptop to school for the internet since there's wifi and stay in school till 8pm or until I feel hungry. Luckily the school lab is also open on weekends so if I need internet, I can go back to school. The bus runs every 20 minutes Mon to Sat or can also walk down the hill for about 20 minutes. At first I did thought of getting internet service but found out it's expensive to hook up the service on my own as it'll cost about 50€ a month for both phone and adsl. Without internet, only weekends would be boring if didn't go anywhere. I thought of getting books to read but the bookstores here don't carry English books. I have yet to check out whether it's possible to change the language of the DVDs here to the original English version, not the dubbed Italian version. If possible then can rent some DVDs to watch.

New home in Italy

My new room is on the top floor of a 4-story apartment building. The 2-bedroom apartment is shared with 2 other lovely ladies who have been living in the apartment snce last Sept. There's a washing machine in the bathroom so no more paying for laundry :) There's no dryer though and there's a drying rack. Would be nicer if there's mircowave or oven. I quite like my room except for a few things. There's no internet connection at home so I have to go to school for internet. Luckily the school's lab is open during the weekends and there's also wifi. It would also be nice to have a proper window. The only window in my room is the door that leads out to the balcony with a view of neighbor's backyard. They should use glass doors like the German's which can be opened like a door with hinge on the side or opened like a window with the hinge at the bottom. The bed is a bit small but more comfortable than the one in Germany. If my have my furry friends with me, then they would have fallen off the bed when I wake up the next morning.

From Germany to Italy

Home in Bonn -> Colgone/Bonn airpot -> Venice Marco Polo Airport -> Venice train station -> Verona train station -> Trento train station -> Trento bus stop -> Home in Povo.

on the flight from cologne/bonn to venice, you get to look down at the alps. the view is just so amazing!
venice seems very interesting. we dragged and carried our heavy luggages across the streets to get from the bus staton to the train staton across the canal.
if i knew there are so many freaking stairs, i wouldn't have agreed to walking and insisted on taking the boat! we have to cross a few small bridges on the same side to get to the main bridge to cross to the other side. all the bridges are made up of flights of stairs. the small bridges has about 1o steps up and 10 steps down. when we got to the foot of the bigger bridge, we were already quite tired. so took a few minutes break and continued going up the bigger bridge. this bridge is twice the size of the smaller bridge. i only managed to get half way up and i just didn't have the strength anymore. then, a very nice man approached and helped me carry my luggage all the way across the bridge. :D since my friend said there are no more stairs to the train station, i was quite relieved. but when we got to the train station, more stairs! up the stairs to get into the station. when we changed train in verona, the next train was in the other platform so we had to go down the stairs and up agan. there are no escalators and no evelator on sight. actually, even to carry the heavy luggage onto and off the train is difficult because the platform is at the same height as the train's wheels. when we finally got to trento, the last flight of stairs awaits us. it's like one and a half stories high. after we got the keys to our apartment, we took a bus there. when we got off the bus, we still had to walk up the slope to get to the apartment. even pushing/dragging the luggage up the slope is very tiring.

lesson learnt: my luggage was 24kg and i can only lift it up with both hands and only carry it for max 10 steps. the next time i travel, i won't pack luggage until i can't carry it comfortably.

train system compared to germany:
1. in germany, escalators and elevators are availble and can be easily spotted.
2. in germany, the platform is usually at the same height as the floor of the train and the gap is quite small so you can just drag your luggage out.
3. in germany, you know which platform the train will leave and arrive when you buy the ticket. in italy, you have to check the board and wait for it to update. when we were in venice, people are standing in front of the board, waiting for it to update the platform number. when the platform number for our train was updated, the train in that platform was already there in front of us while we were waiting!
4. in germany, they announce the stops and train connections. in italy, you have to look at the time or look out the window. when we changed train in verona, one of us had to run down the platform to check the board which platform for our next train.
5. german trains are nicer and also more expensive

Packing & Moving

The past few days had been tough. I could't decide what to pack and what to keep and what to throw. Since I only have 20kg, I couldn't bring much with me. Then, I don't really know how heavy 20kg is so I ended up putting in and removing stuff and trying to lift it to get the right 'feel'. Haha. I still feel it's over 20kg, hopefully I'm wrong coz excess baggage costs 7€ per kg. With the remaining stuff, I stuffed as much as I could into my hand luggage which I will leave with a friend and come back to get it. I didn't really wanna leave too much stuff with her coz our room doesn't have much space to start with but I ended up having two extra shopping bags for her. One filled with sweaters (they take up too much space!) and the other a ski jacket and other small items. Also had a hard time throwing out all the rest of stuff especially the bunch of candies I collected from Karneval Rosenmontag last week. I already ate quite a lot and still left with a container full. Well, I'm pretty much packed and ready to fly tomorrow morning :)

Cooking whatever's left

For the past couple of weeks, I have been trying to use up all the ingredients I have for cooking. Didn't want to waste by throwing away when I move next week. I finished the aborio rice with the last risotto. I doubt I'll make any when I'm in Italy. Hehe. The other day, I found out I only have one portion of short grain rice left. I don't see how to boil just one portion rice in a pot so I tried it with a small frying pan and it actually works. Then I stir fried left over shitake mushrooms, vege, crab sticks to top the rice. Tonight, it's stir fried noodles with chicken and vege. After I scooped the noodles into my plate, I accidentally left the frying stick? on top of the still hot stove plate so part of it melted! Well since it's only 2 days left, I won't really be cooking anymore. Probably just cook the remaining few packets of instant noodles.

Longest train ride

I think I spent more than 6 hours on the train today. First it was 2+ hours ride from Bonn to Frankurt. I went to collect my Italy visa. The guy was late so I had to take a later train back. Since I still had some time till the next train, I went back to the japanese store I saw last time. It's not a fancy store though. More like one of those ugly chinese stores in chinatown staffed with japanese. And they make fresh sushi there so I bought some to eat in the train. They are really delicious, especially the salmon. The texture is like the fatty tuna. Yummy! It's so good to have sushi again after four long months. Anyway, the train from Frankfurt departed 10 minutes late due to some technical problems. It kinda managed to catch up to the scheduled time when it reached Bonn so I didn't get off. I thought I could still manage to catch the train to Aachen in Cologne. But from Bonn to Cologne, the train stopped in the middle for some time. So by the time I get to Cologne, I missed the train. Then, I thought I might still make it to the german exam on time if I catch the next train. I waited for a while until it was announced that that train would be about 5 minutes late. I will definately be late then so I decided not to go. I got on to the next train back to Bonn. The train only left the station 20 minutes later than the scheduled time. Seemed like there was some problems with the tracks. Again, the train stopped half way, this time a lot longer. I wasted about one and a half hour betwen Colgone and Bonn.

About the exam, I just wanted to see how the exam is like and what is the level. I know the chance for me to pass is very slim because I didn't have enough hours yet and I also didn't put much effort on my own either. But since we get 3 chances, why not try it?

Eating Paella

Had a Spanish night last weekend. I never thought cooking can be quite a social event. It actually takes about 5 hours to cook paella. I guess it wouldn't take so long if it's seafood because instead of the usual seafood, we had chicken and rabbit meat. After preparing all the ingredients, chopped and washed, and waiting for the meat to cook, we started to make Sangria. Earlier during shopping, we came across wines in big 1.5L bottles, so we bought a couple of those for the Sangria. Jose also brought Jamon (Spanish ham) from his hometown. I've never seen ham like that before and it tastes really good! They say huge blocks of meat are hung on top of tapas bars in Spain; very interesting. And so we chat, drink and eat tapas while we wait for the food to cook. As the sun set, more and more friends came and more Sangria and tapas were served. Finally at 9pm, the main course was served and the wait was very worthwhile :D

The Jung Type Death Note Test

Had my first exam this evening and it was an oral exam. I never had this kind of exam before so was a bit nervous. Oral exam is usually given when there are about 15 or less students in the class. It's like an interview session where the professor asks question and you answer and it lasts for 20 minutes. I guess it's a good style to see whether certain concepts are understood and it's definately easier to explain by talking rather than writing. After the session, you wait outside while they discuss your performance and then you're called back into the room where they'll roughly go through the questions and comment on how you did on each one. Finally, they'll tell you your score. I did quite well partially coz the professor asked the same questions that I asked him to explain to me the week before :) Glad I took the effort (45 minutes bus ride) to visit his office last week.

Oh, before the exam, I went to McD for lunch and they have curly fries! Hehe. I thought I wasn't going to have any this year. There's no prosperity burger but they have special edition burger called Best Pork this week. It looks really good. I might just go try it.

Last week of class

It's the last week of class and despite having final exams starting Monday, I still went to Aachen for german class this morning. I survived this long long commute throughout the semester! :D It's special today because it really snowed in Aachen. I finally get to see the place covered with snow and it was just magnificent. Plus on the train journey home, I get to see the little houses, plains, forests, mountains all in white.

Tomorrow is my last day of class. We presented our group project yesterday and the only thing left to do is to spruce up the website detailing our project progess. I have started reviewing the materials for some of the classes and I still feel quite nervous about sitting for exams. I'm not sure if I can remember all the materials covered in the semester. One of the reasons why I don't like system with only one final exam. I guess I just need to do what I can.

Being late

I was late for almost all my classes last week. It's not because I woke up late though. I was awake and went through my morning routine with extra time to spare. Then, I started to do other stuff and lost track of time. Or I would be thinking I could get out at a certain time, say 7 but since I need at least 5 minutes to put on my coat and wait for the elevator before I get to the outside of the building, I'm already late for the bus. Also, I realised that my computer clock is again running a minute slower. It didn't matter how many days or weeks that I kept my laptop running, eventually it'll be a minute slower; sometimes sooner sometimes later. Today, I reset it again just after 2 days of last reset.

Group project

This project is for UI design class and there are four members including myself. We're working on the flash prototype of our application and we split our tasks such that the only person who knows Flash in our group does the Flash. The rest of us do the user inteviews, testing, documentation, etc. My group members are all fresh from undergrad and coming from a technical background, it's really tough for them to come up with good design. We did the initial layout and all on paper before the first flash prototype. When I first ran through the initial flash prototype last week, I immediately noticed all the little inconsistencies in the UI; font type, font size, color, alignment, etc. I guess work habit kicked in. The overall design and layout is just like the design on paper but I'm not able to just overlook these little stuff. Well, I tried not be too picky because then it would seem like I'm criticizing his work. But alas, I succumbed. Our task this week is to evaluate the prototype with the design rules and I ended up giving him a long list. He didn't understand why the labels for input need to look the same (even though there are in different section like search and login) or why the title of a subsection on the right need to be aligned with the left, etc. Sigh! Well, at first he was using funky fonts, different fonts with different sizes for all the different sections too. At least that I could explain that we should use font types that people are familiar with looking at so that it's easier for them to read. I also feel a bit frustrated that my suggestions are being "challenged" with no substanstial backing; because at work, I usually get the last say. Furthermore, as we only need to implement the UI and not the engine, we can just assume the application can work wonders. As such, most of my ideas for this application are novel and they just don't "see" it because it was not implemented elsewhere so it's hard time for me to explain and convince to them it's a good idea. We have a website to document our project progress and the flash guy chose to do it in flash and it has horrible UI but none of the other two members have problem with it. Sigh! I guess I need to confront him soon. Well, it's difficult when they don't see anything wrong with it. Plus, final exams starts in about a week. And flash isn't exactly easy to change. I should've offered to do the website earlier.

Frankfurt

After I finished at the consulate office around 11am, I went walking around town. Saw most of the major sights and the shopping district. I came across a japanese supermarket at a corner and saw people moving stuffs into the shop. Surpringly, it's not fancy at all but looks like those ugly chinese supermarkets. I saw signs for sushi and I thought this place should be cheap since it's in a "market" and walked to the door and found that it's closed on monday. Sigh! I'm not sure if I can remember how to get back to that street coz it's slightly off the main streets. Then, the inside of Cathedral of St Bartholomew, also known as the Kaiserdom is just amazing and the music from the huge organ is heavenly. I somehow felt uncomfortable taking photos inside, like I'll distrupt the holiness of the place. Also walked along the river and finally back to the train station.

Now I know why people prefer to take the train than flight. There's no checking-in with the train, the seats are bigger, more comfortable, more legroom, table and power outlet for your computer (some trains have wifi too), you can use your phone, bigger toilet, and great view! I didn't try the restaurant but the food does look tasty. The best part of this train journey is the view along the Rhein as the train runs along the river somewhere between Mainz and Koblenz. You can see the river, little towns by the river and mountains in the background. Too bad couldn't take photos as the window is very reflective.
Went to Frankfurt today to apply for my Italian student visa. Finally get to experience the faster German trains. The journey is about 2 hours. I almost didn't manage to submit my application at the consulate office. When I arrived at about 8:45am, the person handling visa is not there yet so I was asked to wait. I waited for about 45 minutes outside the room but no one showed up. Then I thought, "Oh no...maybe that person is not here today". I already had quite bad luck with my German visa that I needed 3 appointments to finally get my visa done last Thursday. All my friends managed to get theirs done in just one appointment and we have exactly the same situation, just different officer. Anyway, another 15 minutes later, a lady approached me and asked me what I was doing there. When I told her I came for the visa, she said the person is not here today. Seriously, just my bad luck. But she was nice and gave me forms to fill and took my documents. Then, she told me that I can keep my passport and the person will contact me next week to make an appointment to come again. I asked if I could get the visa immediately when I come the next time and she just said maybe because she's not sure if anything else is needed. Oh I sure hope so. A trip costs me almost 60€ and that's already the discounted price!

A good week

I've completed one class! :D Submitted the 20 pages long seminar paper and gave the presentation this morning. Presentation wasn't very smooth coz I had to present it in a different way that I prepared for it. Nevertheless, the professor said despite my confusion with the slides, it was good overall. Hehe. I hope he's not just being nice coz can't really tell. When he replies our emails, he never addresses us by our names; it's always "Dear Student" and it's always just a few sentences. Then again, I'm surprised he remembered my name when he announces that I'll be the next speaker. Maybe I give him too much trouble. Haha. Still, there are two more papers to finish for the writing class. Just waiting for the feedback on the short paper now.

Another nice event today is it finally snowed! Well, more like flurries but it still manages to make the ground white in color. I guess that's about as much as we get here. Maybe there's more in Aachen. Shall see tomorrow. A friend also said that this year is one of the coldest in Bonn coz the temperature fell to like -8C and friends are already complaining cold. It has only been below 0C for this week. I hope it continues to be sunny and cold. I like it.

Oh, I did finally went through the materials for that class over the past weekend and I got most of my questions answered by the TA. I wasn't so 'lost' afterall. This weekend, gotta go through the past 3 weeks materials for Virtual and Augmented Reality class coz I didn't see it in the server. So I emailed the professor and he said it has been there all along and when I looked again, these new files are on the top of the list. Earlier, I just scrolled to be bottom and didn't see anything new beneath "file 9". yah, "file 10" would appear on top. silly me.

Eating Ramen

A small corner shop japanese restaurant serves noodles and rice dishes. It's a very popular place as there just isn't much authentic japanese restaurants around here. There were 3 groups already in queue when we got there so we had to wait for about 30 minutes outside in the cold to get seated. The place smelled nice as it's a open kitchen concept. I had the Tokusei Shio ramen which is the recommendation of the day. I quite like the soup but there's just too much noodle and little meat. Usually Tokusei would have extra meat not less! My friends also had ramen, one had curry and the other had the spicy one. The spicy ramen tastes quite similar to Korean spicy soup though. When we were dining there, I noticed quite a number of japanese patrons. Well, if it's edible by Japanese, it's good enough for us. Hehe. Oh but it's expensive!

I miss Japanese food so much!

Blah

Been feeling lousy this whole week. Couldn't sleep at night so ended up having difficulty getting up in the morning. And I also blame the weather for being so gloomy. Since I have no classes in the morning this week except on Monday, I could only drag myself out of bed past 10am. Sometimes I would still be daydreaming. Then I spend 1-2 hours with my morning routine; breakfast, check weather, check mail, etc etc. Before I know, it's already 1 and it's time to go for class. Then I realised I haven't taken lunch and I'll be hungry at 4 during class. The timing is just so screwed up! And when I get home from class, I don't feel like working on assignments. It's like when you go home after work, you leave work behind. Arrgghh this doesn't work when you're studying. Plus, I feel more alive working on work problems than doing my school assignments. I guess probably I have no interest in the subject and I still have not much understanding of the subject. Which is why I have been planning to review the subject since last Christmas but I have yet to get to it. I shall be determined and start doing something about it this weekend. Can't afford to flung the final.

Nice saturday

Went for lunch after german class and it turned out to be the four of us again. This time the Spanish guy's Indian colleague also joined us. We decided to have Italian and since the name of the dishes are in Italian, we have no problem with the menu. Hehe. After lunch, Eileen had to do shopping so the rest of us decided to catch a movie in Cologne coz it'll be easier for me to get back to Bonn. We drove there and for the passengers in the car, it was our first time on the autobahn in a car. And yes, some parts of the highway has no limit. When we got into Cologne, the directions to the cinema was quite complicated so we decided to park the car and take a cab. Was lucky we found street parking and only had about 30 minutes left before parking is free (after 6pm) so parking only costs us 1€. Next, we had to look for taxi stand coz you can only take taxi from there. Found one nearby and it was my first time in a german cab. The back just barely fits the three of us with our coats on. I didn't remember Merz having such small space. Well, perhaps our coats really took up space. We paid almost 8€ for 2+ km distance. Taking a train or bus would end up about the same price. Bought tickets for The Prestige and went walking around the area.

We ended up choosing a local bar and the atmosphere was quite lively. We had a funny time ordering food too. Laurent asked if there's chicken with french fries in German, and the waitress said schnitzel (deep fried breaded pork) with french fries. So, he said he'll only have french fries. Then, Jose ordered "Weiner Art" from the menu on the wall and asked if that's chicken in English and the waitress said yes chicken, very good. After the waitress left, Laurent and I were puzzled coz the waitress said earlier there was no chicken. Then Jose said maybe there's no chicken with french fries. Then we started laughing. That's very German indeed! Hahaha. Earlier in the week, Laurent used the wrong color plate at his cafeteria for pasta and he couldn't pay. He had to go back and use the plate with the correct color for pasta. When Jose's food finally came, it turned out to be schnitzel! He was quite mad but he still finished the food.

We went back to the cinema after food and found it packed with people. It's a small cinema with 3 theatres. I've already heard some friends complaining about cinemas in Germany and our German friend told us that's the typical cinema here. We don't have a choice anyway if we want to watch movies in original language. Well, we could also go to Netherlands. Perhaps they have better cinema there.

Cooking with wine

Finally bought myself a bottle for wine after resisting the temptation for months. After I got the wine together with my groceries for the week home, I realised that I didn't have corkscrew. Well, was kinda excited so I went out to the nearby store to get it. The corkscrew turned out to be more expensive than the wine itself! Anyway, popped the cork, had half a glass and found that the taste is nice but very very mild. It was a cheap bottle after all and I paid for it with the empty coke cans I returned. Yeah, I used to drink quite a bit of coke. Now, it's only one can a week. Later, I used the wine to cook risotto with mushroom and shrimp for dinner. The flavor turns out quite well and that's pretty much my achievement for today. Still have about 2/3 left. Perhaps I shall have another half a glass later and use it to cook chicken tomorrow.

It's finally here! And it's got almost everything that I want. I don't use 3G here so it's not so important. A bit skeptical on how well qwerty works though. Kinda have to relearn typing with the thumb. Still, feel pretty glad that I decided not to buy a PDA phone last month. Oohhh...can't wait for it to come in Q4.

Back to School

Still hasn't got used to attending classes. I was yawning quite a bit during the 11am class on Monday and only managed to get off bed at 11am today. As the school break progresses, I eventually slipped back into my normal operating hours from about 10am to past 2am. If I managed to get up at 4am tomorrow to go to Aachen for german class, then I think I can fix the hours. After spending a week speaking English, I find that my German has deteriorated a little. Words doesn't come to mind as easily anymore. The same happened with the German lecturer in class on Monday. At times, he was struggling to get the words out in English. Well, the good news is I managed to finish the first draft of my seminar paper! Couldn't believe that I could actually produce a 20 page paper. Two more days to work on the paper before submission is due. Then gotta work on the powerpoint version of the paper for presentation next week. In a way I couldn't wait for the semester to be over but then it means that finals is only a month away.

London vacation

Vacation was pretty fun and relaxing. The weather was a disappointment though, being wet and gloomy almost every day. And severe wind was predicted for new year's eve and a lot of cities in UK cancelled the celebration. For safety reason, I stayed home and watched the new year's programme on tv and it turned out that it wasn't too bad in London. Sigh! Maybe another year then. I braved through the strong wind and rain with an umbrella the night before new year's eve and still got all soaked while walking across the Millenium Bridge from Tate Modern. Despite the super lousy weather, I managed to see the major sights, shop, eat a lot and met up with friends :)

Upon arrival at the airport, I felt so relieved that I finally can understand the people around me. No more straining the ear to try to understand what people are saying. Stuffs are as expensive as in Germany but the sale items are really a bargain. They have some nice markets too and I find Camden Lock quite similar to the Bangkok markets. After shopping at Harrods, as we were walking around the building, I smell something familiar but couldn't make out what it was. Then, I saw the sign. Krispy Kreme! :D Too bad I couldn't get a dozen coz I was leaving the next day. I was actually planning to watch a movie like every other day coz I miss going to the cinema quite a bit but finally we only managed to catch Happy Feet.

During the first few days, I still tried to work on my paper while waiting for my housemates to wake up. And I felt that I'm wasting a lot of time watching lame old English comedy at home during the night. But I didn't want to seem unfriendly so I stayed in the living room watching whatever programs they were watching. As the week progressed, I managed to relax and not think about how much time is being wasted. Hehe. So, did not get much work done afterall. Now that I'm home, I gotta continue working on my paper and start working on the other assignments. Wish I have one more week before school starts.

Off to London

Was planning to finish the first draft of my seminar paper, review German lessons and go through the materials for the network class during the Christmas break but I failed badly. I've only managed to finish three quarter of the paper, reviewed German lesson once, and not even have a glance at the network stuff. I did have a lot of time during the long Christmas weekend but somehow I wasted a lot of time being lazy. Sigh! Now, I need to continue to work on my paper in London. Still, I look forward to having a good time during the one week vacation. :D

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!! May 2007 be a better year for all.

Christmas goodies

The Christmas atmosphere here is awesome! At the Weihnachtsmarkts (Christmas markets) , one can find all sorts of things for sale. All pretty pretty things. As for food, one can find a variety of meat, potatoes, pastries, candies, roasted nuts, etc etc. They're all tasty! The famous drink is Glühwein, which is warm red wine with cinnamon and some other spices. Throughout the day and night, people would stand around small tables with a drink and chat. It can be cold sometimes but we still do it. It's all the fun with shopping and eating and drinking.

Some of my personal goodies include Christ-stollen, dominosteine, half a bag of chocs from France, and a souvenier mug from Christmas market in Bonn. The stollen a traditional christmas cake in Germany. I guess it's like the English fruit cake but the taste is different all together. It has sugar dusted on top and the one I bought had marzipan filling. Yummy! There are other variety of stollen too; some contains almonds, some has rum. Dominosteine are small layers of gingerbread with jam and marzipan covered with chocolate. I think these are the best choc fillings. Hehe. And the choc pralines are so smooth and it just doesn't feel like choc at all. I could have finish the bag in a day. Also, there's all sorts of Lebkuchen. I've never really liked gingerbread but the ones here are really nice. :D

Cooking chicken-katsu don

It's Christmas eve and I felt like having something nice. Since it's too difficult to make the typical Christmas food for one portion, I didn't really know what to have. Then I thought about the ingredients I have in my kitchen and it struck me. Katsu don! The egg yolks here are just too yellow. I have already took half the yolk out and it's still so yellow! Nonetheless, one satisfying meal for the eve. Guten Appetit! :D

Tis the season to be jolly

Wishing everyone a blessed Christmas and may the new year bring you much joy and love. Happy holidays!

My dear iPod

My iPod has been a wonderful companion especially on days which I have long commute. Most of the time, I don't know exactly what songs are in it. The other day I discovered Home by Michael Buble on my iPod. I think it's a simple and beautiful song . It kinda made me reflect on my personal experiences. Anyway, when I found a nice "new" song, I usually listen to it over and over again. So, the next day I was eager to listen to the song on my iPod again. But when I turned it on, it wouldn't play. It was blinking green and orange. I was worried that my iPod was sick and I thought maybe it's too cold. It still wouldn't play after I warm it up with my hands. Came home, looked it up on the net. Then connect it to iTunes and found that the playlist has disappeared! I had to reset the iPod and load all the songs again. It was such a relief when it worked after the reset. Maybe it's getting close to its shelf life. So, should I get a new iPod? If wanna buy one, I should buy it this year coz VAT is going from 16% up to 19% next year.

Alcohol in class at 11am!

Some of my classmates in german class have the idea of sharing alcoholic drinks from their home country. Two Saturdays ago, one of the Japanese gal brought sake and some riceballs to class. We all had some after class. Then, this past Saturday, a few others brought theirs to share. This time we had it during the class break since some had to leave immediately after class. The turkish couple brought Raki, a traditional alcoholic drink with whopping 40% alcohol and feta cheese and chic peas to go with it. You add a bit of water to the clear liquid to make it a bit milky. It smells very nice and I like it though you can feel your throat burning after you swallow it. Then, the French guy from the champagne region who went home a week earlier, arrived with 2 bottles of champagnes and chocolates :D Of course everyone was waiting for the champagne so we opened a bottle. Oooh, it's so good! Later, the Russian arrived with a bottle of spicy vodka. You can actually see pepper inside the bottle. We decided it was too much alcohol in the morning and we still have another half session of class so we kept the vodka for later. We offered some to the teacher too and she seems cool about it.

Cooking rice stew

With broccoli bits, carrots, mushrooms, crab meat chunks and shrimp

It just occured to me that there are other ways to make use of leftover cold rice besides making fried rice. Rice stew! Just need to make the soup base first then throw in all the ingredients and the cold rice and let it simmer for about 20 minutes. A hot, hearty meal for the winter. It's even easier than frying rice and also less cleaning in the kitchen. :D

Ice Skating

At Bonn Ice

Finally went ice skating last week. The atmosphere was very nice with colorful lightings and music. It cost 4.50€ to rent the skates and it was only for two hours. I'm not sure if they impose the time limit due to high demand. There were lots of people and the ice was melting and puddles of water everywhere. I was anxious to know whether I can still skate. I had expected the worse but it turned out that I didn't entirely loose my skill. I started skating quite clumsily and tried my best not to fall. One would be very wet if one fell onto the ice. My friend's jacket and pants were soaked and the water was also dirty. By the end of the 2 hours, I was getting better though still not skating as smoothly as I did before. Still, it's quite nice :D

Cooking Risotto

Risotto with broccoli, mushroom and shrimp

Have always loved risotto but had never attempted to cook, until recently. Read the recipes and seemed like it's easy to make so I gave a try last month. Was surprised it turned out being edible! Haha. I had already made risotto twice for dinner but the lighting in my room was just too terrible to take pictures. So, today I made it for lunch. I doubt it's something I'll cook often as it takes longer time in the kitchen. Can't multi-task either. Frying rice is a lot faster and I still like fried rice.

Silbermond - Das Beste

Ich liebe das Lied :D

aufstehen

Been having a tough time getting out of bed lately. When I wake up, I look out of the window from my bed and it's usually either dark (4-7am) or gloomy (8am). Without some sunshine, it just didn't feel like the day has started. I think I spent at least half an hour more in bed trying to make myself to get up. The sky only starts to get bright around 8:30am. Then there's those gloomy rainy days, which is quite frequent here, which makes you just wanna cuddle up in bed.

Reading & Writing

At first I was quite pleased that most of the courses here doesn't require writing programs. I wasn't sure if I could still write anything in C++/Java. However, having experienced the tedious process of writing papers, I'd rather write programs now. You can just start writing the program and it either work or it doesn't. So you know whether you are doing it right. But with papers, you gotta read tons of materials written by other people first and then decide which of these papers are useful for your paper. Still, you can't be sure whether you're on the right track especially when you're not sure what exactly needs to be written. I'm in that situation with my seminar paper now. It took me days to write the "table of contents", basically a detailed outline of my paper. Furthermore, over the weekend, we had a writing assignment in pairs to write about Douglas Engelbart, the person who "invented" the computer/web as we know it today. It's already difficult to write in pairs and yet we are also graded for writing style! I forgot most of what I learnt in English 101 and 102.

If you're interested in Engelbart's work, check this out. You'll be amazed what he had built in 1968 and some of the nice features in his system are still not available in ours today.

Been having lack of sleepy lately due to a huge amount of assignments. I myself was surprised I could wake up at 4am to go for German class yesterday. I usually sleep in the train but yesterday I overslept and ended up one station further than the Cologne Hbf (central train/bus station). Luckily, that train's last stop is just one station away so I went to another platform to catch another train back to Cologne and make it back in time for my usual train to Aachen. Phew! Otherwise I need to wait for another 30-45 minutes for the next train to Aachen and will be 15 minutes late for class.
